Customer Product Reviews : Review I have only had this notebook a short time but so far I really like it. I ordered it with most of the options available and the Vista Ultimate/XP Pro downgrade. The WUXGA screen is especially beautiful. It's pretty thin and lightweight for a 17" notebook. The six USB ports are very nice. Other than Windows XP, I am not using any of the software that Dell puts on the machine. I do not like the way that they customize the Windows desktop to use the larger than normal fonts and other extra large Windows desktop settings. This is my main desktop PC so I had a lot of software that I needed to install on the machine for my computer consulting business. Something went wrong with the order that I installed my software onto the machine so I had to start from scratch. I am much happier now that I reinstalled Windows XP Pro from the re-installation disc that came with the machine. It was kind of difficult to figure out exactly which drivers needed to be installed on the machine and in which order. The Resource CD did a pretty good job of helping me with that task. I did have problems with this and it took me five more Windows installs from scratch to get everything working correctly. Apparently, Dell does not ship the latest version of certain hardware drivers with this machine. First I had problems connecting to the machine through Remote Desktop because there was a problem with the older nVIDIA drivers that Dell has on their Resource CD. The machine would freeze as soon as I tried connecting to it remotely. Downloading the latest ones from the nVIDIA site fixed that problem. It wasn't too hard to figure out which drivers were correct for this machine. Then next the Intel 5300 WiFi adapter and/or software would keep losing the profiles that I saved. It was originally working but then it stopped working. So off to the Intel Web site to download their latest drivers for the 5300 WiFi adapter. That software had an option to install just the drivers or just the software or both. I ended up installing just the drivers and let Windows manage the WiFi connections. There did not seem to be any downside to not using the Intel management software to control the adapter. Then next I had a problem with the Realtek gigabit Ethernet adapter! Off to the Realtek Web site to download their latest drivers. I finally figured out that you need to get their software for their 8168 Ethernet controller. So everything finally worked out using these three updated drivers that I downloaded, along with the other essential driver software from the Dell Resource CD disc. It took me most of three days experimenting with this stuff and installing software but the machine is finally working great with all the software I need! If you have a day to spend and would like to have a most excellent XP machine, I definitely recommend reinstalling XP and the required hardware drivers.
